When I Think of Child Development

I chose this quote because it highlights the individuality of every child. Not every child is gifted and talented, but each child has the potential to be unique. As a future educator it is something that I am mindful of and always will push my students to be their very best.

Testing for Intelligence?

Childhood assessment is a process of gathering information about a child, reviewing the information, and then using the information to plan educational activities that are at a level the child can understand and is able to learn from (Department of Early Education and Care, n.d.). Majority of schools here in America plan their teaching curriculum around school testing assessment instead of what a child needs to learn to succeed. I think that assessments are a double-edged sword because it can be helpful to a child/student and it can be detrimental to them as well. Teacher should use the information to develop methods to better enhance their teaching abilities and the learning abilities of their students. The results of the assessments should be discussing with families to assist in helping the child in their weak areas.

I decided to view to country of Turkey to see how they view childhood assessment.

Turkey

-Conduct standardized testing three times a year

-Measure a child’s performance differences on task as to representing theoretical construct

-Authentic assessment that evaluated using real-life events

-Use assessments to form developmental checklist

There was not a lot of information on the early childhood assessment in Turkey. Above are some of the major things that they use to assess their children. I did discover that they use their assessment more towards truly assessing the child in the hope of further developing the child in their learning abilities.

Consequences of Stress on Children's Development

I choose to talk about racism from the list of stressors for this week’s blog assignment. As a young child growing up in the 1930s, my grandmother experienced racism. Back during these times, black and white people were segregated. She was unable to use specific bathrooms, only use black only water fountains, and just attend black-only schools. For her, as a child, her parents had to explain to her all these measures that were in place back during those times.  She also witnessed violence and death to those that did not adhere to the laws and the unfair beatings and lynching of black people.

I choose to learn more about the country of Malaysia. The Malaysian people deal with racism within their country. Malaysia is comprised of Europeans, Americans, Arabs, and Thai (Kaur, 2018). In my research, I discovered the people are creating a racism country between the Muslims and the Chinese people in the country. In the 2017 Malaysia Racial Discrimination report, it found that racism is becoming more pronounced and on the increase within the country (Kaur, 2018). Some of the examples are posting of signs that are limiting to only a specific race to use of restrooms, laundromat, and jobs. These are some of the same things that my grandmother experienced back when segregation was law and significantly enforced. Today in Malaysia the people are choosing to place these methods of discrimination on one another.
